About

On this Beverly Bird Walks program for adults, and in conjunction with Climate Preparedness Week, we will return to Sally Milligan Park. On this walk, we will look for migrants as they come down from the north and learn about how climate change impacts migration patterns. Over the past 10 years 103 species have been reported here at Sally Milligan Park in September, including 21 species of warblers. Wear sturdy shoes for these trails and expect tree roots and rocky outcrops. Binoculars are not required, but registration is! This program is rain or shine, however heavy or dangerous weather conditions may lead to cancellation. Check our Event Calendar for a cancellation announcement before attending.

Here’s how this Beverly Bird Walk will go:

Meet at the soccer field parking lot on Cross Lane where we will leave from at 8:05 AM sharp!
From the trailhead of the new Sally Milligan Extension trail at the edge of the soccer field, we will take a short stroll through the woods by the fields.
At the rocky outcrop, we’ll go over it and down onto overgrown old farm fields, then proceed to the woods.
In the woods, we will listen and look for woodland birds and owls.
In the fields, we will follow the new trail. Then, we will take the Yellow Trail to look for migrants heading back south.
We will end the walk by following the blue trail to the Cross Lane entrance. Then, we will walk along that road back to the soccer field.

Greg Power started birding over 40 years ago. He took up the hobby while working at sea. He casually maintained it over the years as he could. In 2021, he enrolled in Massachusetts Audubon’s Birders Certificate Program (BCP). Since retiring in 2022, he has been able to dedicate significantly more time to birding. As a part of BCP, Greg identified many worthwhile birding spots in and around Beverly. Drawing on his experiences with other Beverly birders, he worked with Cornell University’s Laboratory of Ornithology eBird staff and others to create new birding hotspots in the city. Greg seeks new birding spots in Beverly. He often visits parks, playgrounds, and other open spaces. When he’s not birding, Greg volunteers with local environmental groups, like Massachusetts Audubon and The Trustees of Reservations.

Registration for this event opens Monday, September 1 at 9:00 AM.
