The Lurie Center for Autism will have Christopher J. McDougle, MD, for their July Coffee Convo presentation: Catatonia and Autism.  Catatonia is a syndrome that can occur in the context of several disorders, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The essential feature of catatonia is a marked psychomotor disturbance that may involve decreased motor activity, decreased social interaction or excessive or atypical motor activity. Catatonia in ASD is being increasingly recognized and diagnosed. The diagnosis can be challenging as many of the symptoms of catatonia overlap with the clinical presentation of ASD. In this presentation, the clinical presentation of catatonia in ASD will be reviewed, along with potential treatments. Plenty of time will be allowed for questions and answers.
